Nahanni Butte History
The elders of Nahanni Butte have a very clear understanding that the word nahanni is from the word "naha" meaning the people that roamed through the mountain and valley. This small settlement of Nahanni Butte was formed in the early 1940's and now has a population of 116 people.
The community sits on the picturesque banks of the South Nahanni River 1 kilometer up river from where the Liard and south Nahanni rivers meet. Nahanni Butte is located 21 kms off the Liard highway, 95 kms north of Fort Liard. The people of Nahanni Butte have always lived their lives on the land and are very traditional in their way of life and understandings. Nahanni Butte in an isolated community that has no road access during the summer months. Access is available by river taxi or air charter. However during the winter months the community has access by a winter road which is built annually. An all season road is currently under construction. The friendly Natives of Nahanni Butte are always happy to tell stories or help out with visitors who are passing through enroute from Nahanni National Park
which sits in our back yard.
